It will come as a relief to plant owners that the genus Monstera does not bear any resemblance to Godzilla, King Kong, or Little Shop of Horrors’ human-eating plant from outer space. The name ‘Monstera’ refers instead to the genus’ abnormally shaped leaves, which usually grow with ready-made holes.
Monstera Deliciosa
Botanical Name: Monstera Deliciosa
The most well-known species of Monstera, the Deliciosa is named as such because when kept well, it produces a rather tasty tropical fruit (purportedly tasting like a cross between a banana and a pineapple), though it is more likely to bear fruit in the wild. Known as the Cheese Plant, the Monstera Deliciosa can grow to 40 feet in the wild, but usually doesn’t grow to more than four feet when kept as a houseplant. In summer, it may also blossom with a cup-shaped flower not dissimilar to a lily.
An evergreen plant, the Deliciosa will do nicely with an inexpensive soil. It should be watered daily, but it doesn’t require soaking. This plant likes a decent amount of shade – but should not be kept in the dark, meaning it does quite well as a corner-plant in a well-lit room.
