Star Sansevieria

Botanical Name: Sansevieria Kirkii

Sansevieria plants belong to the family asparagaceae – the same family as the asparagus. The type of plant varies from species to species, but the genus does contain a notable number of succulents. Originating in Africa, and South Asia, some species of the Sansevieria genus also take common names such as Devil’s tongue, Djinn’s tongue and Snake Tongue.

Most species of Sansevieria have foliage shaped in a rosette, but whether the leaves are thick or soft depends on the specific climate where the species are grown. Similarly, care for plants in the Sansevieria genus is also climate dependent.

Owners should be sure not to confuse plants in the Sansevieria genus with plants in the Dracaena genus, as their similar appearances give way to dramatically different care requirements.

Star Sansevieria

Botanical Name: Sansevieria Kirkii

Sansevieria Kirkii is a succulent native to Tanzania in East Africa.  It takes the common name of Star Sansevieria.

The Star Sansevieria is a quirky plant whose leaves lie across the ground while its complex inflorescence stands upright in the centre, almost like a large dandelion or a pompom used in sewing.  The leaves on the Star Sansevieria are flat but thick; they are wide at their base but taper off towards the tip. Each leaf is deep green and variegated with rounded splotches of a much lighter grey green.  The end of the inflorescence is circled with very little white and green petals.

The Star Sansevieria should never be kept in temperatures below freezing but should have no trouble at room temperature in most homes.  Light should be bright but filtered – consider placing the Star Sansevieria near a large window. Being a succulent, the Star Sansevieria should be watered once weekly and not at all in winter and kept in a well-draining succulent soil.
