DRACAENA

Dracaena is a genus of trees and succulents mostly native to Africa. Species of Dracaena often have very thick leaves, which enable them to survive long periods of drought. Combined with their ability to cope with low light levels, this drought-resistance makes many species of Dracaena popular houseplants.

Dracaena Marginata

Native to Madagascar and often confused with Palms due to their fanning shape, the Marginata has thin, elliptical leaves with a glossy texture.  Though the centre of the leaf is deep green, it is fringed with red or pale yellow.  The Marginata’s leaves can grow to be a metre long – 50 times their breadth!

Those who live in cooler climates or who experience a lot of rainfall should grow the Marginata indoors as it likes a dry environment and a minimum temperature of 15 degrees Celsius.  Its soil should be relatively dry and certainly well-draining, as consistently wet soil will cause irreparable root decay.  For this same reason, watering should occur infrequently. The Marginata also likes plenty of light, but it will tolerate some shade.

LightThey like nice bright light but no direct, hot sun. On the other hand, keep it out of low light areas – no dark corners please.

Pet FriendlyBy the way, kitties love to chomp on these tender, crispy leaves

NoteArachnophobes be warned – this plant is prone to get spider mite in its lifetime, but before you go reaching for the flamethrower, try some diluted dish soap in a spray bottle first. If that doesn’t work, move!
