Calatheas, also known as Prayer Plants, are a genus of plant native to the tropical Americas. Due to their interesting foliage, they are popular houseplants in spite of the difficulty in growing them. Calathea leaves often bear interesting patterns with burgundy undersides and will ‘close up’ during the night and unfurl each morning.
Calathea Freddie
Botanical Name: Calathea concinna Freddie
The Calathea ‘Freddie’, like the rest of its family, has a unique set of leaves. With a glossy texture, burgundy underside, and scalloped edge, it would look at home as the design for a locket. Its leaves are variegated, with dark green stripes and a dark green border lying against a lighter green body. These plants usually don’t grow to be very big.
As low-lying tropical plants, Freddies like a moisture-rich soil and prefer not to have an abundance of direct sunlight, which can cause sunburn. It is best not to let the Freddie get too dry, but it can withstand a few days of non-watering as long as they are kept in a humid environment. Otherwise, the Freddie is a good plant for a determined and diligent beginner or an intermediate plant-owner looking for a new additions to their garden.
Plant Care
It may be strong in colour, but very fair in nature so prefers darker rooms away from open windows
Keep it hydrated and ensure good drainage from the bottom
Good mix between soil & peat moss
Absolutely, probably more than you. This one thinks it’s a zebra so will fit right in.
Although ‘Freddie’ loves the shade, he would thank you for a humidifier to keep the air just how he likes it to thrive
