Perle von Nurnberg

The succulent plant has been a popular variety for quite a while now and this doesn’t seem to be changing. Succulent plants come in a wide array of shapes, sizes and colours and are quite a low maintenance species of plant, making them attractive to many. Succulents are a collection of plants that use their thick and fleshy leaves to store water, which means they are able to generally thrive in hot and dry climates. The word succulent originates from the Latin word ‘Sucus’, which means sap or juice.

Perle von Nurnberg

Perle von Nurnberg succulents are members of the Echeveria genus and are usually evergreen perennials. Succulents in the Echeveria genus usually grow to a maximum size of around 50 centimetres (around a foot and a half), which makes them the perfect size for a fixture as a standing plant. Like many succulents, they grow in a rosette shape, but it is their unique colour which really makes them stand out.

The leaves on a Perle von Nurnberg succulent have an intriguing convex shape which tapers into a pointed tip. To add to their quirky shape, the leaves on the Perle von Nurnberg are coloured an extremely striking bluish purple, tending towards a brighter purple around the borders and an almost white hue at the centre. This gives rise to their common name of ‘Perle von Nurnberg’, or ‘Pearl of Nuremburg’.

The Perle von Nurnberg is best placed near a window with lots of bright light, preferably not north-facing, and should not be placed in direct sunlight. It is not a demanding plant in regard to its soil, so a regular succulent mix from the garden centre should be fine. As with many succulents, the Perle von Nurnberg should not be watered during the winter months, as this can cause root rot. Outside of the winter months, watering it one or two times per week is ideal. The Perle von Nurnberg should always be kept in temperatures above freezing but is otherwise exceptionally hardy.
