Stephania Venosa

Stephania Venosa

Stephania is a genus of perennial vines which grow from bulbs known as a ‘caudex’. The leaves of species of Stephania grow in a spiral pattern around the stem of the plant. They are known as peltate leaves, which means that they take a fairly circular shape and are attached to the stem of the plant on their undersides. They are nature to the Southern Hemisphere, usually being found in Australasia and Southeast Asia.

Stephania Venosa

Botanical Name: Stephania Venosa

Sometimes called the ‘Mountain Turtle Plant’, Stephania Venosa hails from Southeast Asia.  It is sometimes referred to as Stephania Rotundifolia, which was the Venosa’s previous scientific name, now considered outdated.  It is a climbing plant which can reach 3 metres in height (around 10 feet) if cared for correctly, and 50cm in width. Their leaves resemble large kidney beans (or small kidneys).  Like all Stephania plants, the Mountain Turtle Plant grows from a caudex.

Stephania Venosa needs a rich soil, but this must also be well-drained as its caudex is sensitive to overt water exposure.  Venosa should be kept warm and sheltered to increase humidity and protect it from the sun. Stephania Venosa is not a hardy plant.  Its caudex can take a little frost, but those growing the Venosa in cooler environments should keep it indoors during cold spells.
