Caladiums are a genus of popular ornamental plants. They have large leaves, which gives rise to the colloquial name of ‘Elephant Ear’ – something they share with Alocasia and Colocasia, which are also members of the Araceae family to which Caladiums belong. They are also sometimes called ‘Angel Wings’ or ‘Heart of Jesus’. They emerge during the rainy season in Central and South America, as well as in parts of Africa and India. Their leaves are often patterned in striking and unusual colors, particularly pink.

Another pink perennial, the New Wave’s leaves display segments of vivid pink in between bright lime green borders, which often sprawl into and across the pink segments. Shaped like arrowheads, New Waves look delightfully fun and have the potential to add a quirky touch to apartments whose landlords insist on white walls. They are unlikely to grow taller than two feet, so they’re appropriate for owners with limited space.
The New Wave likes moist soil but should be kept in a pot with holes for drainage. It is tolerant of heat and likes a great deal of light, though it will survive in partial shade. It should be watered regularly. The New Wave is not especially picky about soil, though a well-draining soil is preferred, which makes it a good beginner’s plant for those in warmer climates, or for those in cooler climates who are able to maintain heat and light.
