Caladiums are a genus of popular ornamental plants. They have large leaves, which gives rise to the colloquial name of ‘Elephant Ear’ – something they share with Alocasia and Colocasia, which are also members of the Araceae family to which Caladiums belong. They are also sometimes called ‘Angel Wings’ or ‘Heart of Jesus’. They emerge during the rainy season in Central and South America, as well as in parts of Africa and India. Their leaves are often patterned in striking and unusual colors, particularly pink.
Caladium ‘Summer Breeze’
Botanical Name: Caladium ‘Summer Breeze’
Though the Summer Breeze, like other Caladiums, will not grow to more than two feet, its lower limit is slightly higher than other Caladiums, lying at 18 inches rather than 12 inches. Summer Breeze is marked by a unique pink colouring and arrowhead-shaped leaves. However, unlike other Caladiums, it is the Summer Breeze’s veins that are pink, with the body of its leaf showing a labyrinthine pattern of green and white. It is certainly a striking plant, displaying unusual potential to be both soothing and eye-catching at once.
As a Caladium, the Summer Breeze enjoys shade and should be kept out of the sun. Although it likes regular watering, it should be kept in well-draining pots and soils – an absorbent soil is not at all ideal for this plant. Once due diligence has been taken in appropriately setting up the Summer Breeze, it will not require a huge level of maintenance.
