Caladiums are a genus of popular ornamental plants. They have large leaves, which gives rise to the colloquial name of ‘Elephant Ear’ – something they share with Alocasia and Colocasia, which are also members of the Araceae family to which Caladiums belong. They are also sometimes called ‘Angel Wings’ or ‘Heart of Jesus’. They emerge during the rainy season in Central and South America, as well as in parts of Africa and India. Their leaves are often patterned in striking and unusual colors, particularly pink.
Caladium ‘Thai Pink Queen’
Botanical Name: Caladium ‘Thai Pink Queen’
Sometimes known by the common name ‘Thai Beauty’, the Pink Queen is a rare plant which comes without a scientific species name. It is incredibly unique, with heart-shaped leaves variegated not in shades of green, but in a gradient from pink to white. The Pink Queen’s leaf has dark green veins which strike eye-catchingly against its body. It usually doesn’t grow to more than two feet tall or wide, which means it could be a good accent for a living room or dining room.
The Pink Queen is deciduous, so it will become dormant in Autumn. During its dormant season, it does not need to be watered. When it is not dormant, the Pink Queen will want regular watering, so it is important to ensure that its pot has drainage holes, and its soil is rich and well-draining. As a low-lying plant native to Thailand, it likes a lot of heat, but not too much light. Owners could consider keeping it between taller plants in a warm room.
