Stephania is a genus of perennial vines which grow from bulbs known as a ‘caudex’. The leaves of species of Stephania grow in a spiral pattern around the stem of the plant. They are known as peltate leaves, which means that they take a fairly circular shape and are attached to the stem of the plant on their undersides. They are nature to the Southern Hemisphere, usually being found in Australasia and Southeast Asia.
Stephania Suberosa
Botanical Name: Stephania Suberosa
Stephania Suberosa is a plant which can grow to up to four metres tall. Like the rest of its family, it has large peltate leaves which grow from a large, woody, above-ground caudex. Its leaves are sometimes variegated with a darker green middle contrasting its lighter green borders, which makes the Suberosa a striking sight.
Like most Stephania plants, Suberosa hails from Southeast Asia. This means it tends to like humidity and heat. Although the Suberosa should be watered regularly, owners should take care to ensure soil and potting allow for decent drainage. In contrast to other Stephania plants, the Suberosa does not mind a little sun, though it should not be allowed to receive an excessive amount of light.
